A Breakdown of the Lineups for Team Captain America vs Team Iron Man in CIVIL WAR

Marvel has done an expert marketing job of giving fans just enough info, so that they aren’t hungry enough to ask for more. For example, in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, they have given a full synopsis detailing all of the various Marvel characters that are set to appear in the sequel. The list is drool-inducing for comic book fans, including the introduction of Black Panther, Ant-Man, Vision, War Machine, Falcon, and many more familiar Avengers’ faces appearing in the upcoming movie. Knowing the scope of the roster has excited fans so much, they have forgotten to ask, which side is everybody on?

As we should all know by now, the third Captain America adventure will be an adaptation of the Civil War storyline, where Tony Stark and Steve Rogers divide the Marvel universe up and go to war. According to Heroic Hollywood, they have uncovered exactly where the line will be drawn in the sand between the two factions of Avengers. So, let’s dig deep into each character and speculate how they might factor into the upcoming movie based on previous info.

Team Stark

War Machine

This is Stark’s right-hand man since the very first sequence of the Marvel cinematic universe. Let that sink in for a second. There is no way that he won’t be backing up his best-friend in battle. Plus, we know that he will be getting some upgrades as well. Now if we could get to make another Iron Man/War Machine mix for Civil War, all will be right in the world.

Vision

This is another member that makes sense. At the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision is essentially a newborn child. So it is only natural that he would gravitate towards the person who gave him life. After all, Tony Stark is basically his grandfather. Or father. Well, they aren’t blood, but they are related…it’s all pretty weird.

Spider-Man

In the comic storyline an adult Peter Parker sides with Stark, before eventually defecting to Captain America’s side. It is hard to imagine that they will be adapting this verbatim, since it has been speculated that Stark could make an appearance in Spidey’s first solo film. Spider-Man choosing a side does raise a lot of questions however, since Stark will essentially be recruiting a child soldier. It’s possible that his affiliation is more circumstantial. It would make sense if he simply likes to hang at Stark’s lab and play with his high-tech gear and inadvertently gets dragged into the conflict.

Black Widow

In HH’s report, they explain that at least one member will defect during the course of the movie. If they are keeping with the comics and Stark is supporting the government’s attempts to register, or monitor super-powered beings, that would go against Widow’s stance at the end of The Winter Soldier. In her final scene, she challenged the government to come after her. Perhaps, something that occurs early in the film shakes her faith, which aligns her with Stark. However, there was a clear chemistry between Cap, Falcon, and Widow, which was established in the last installment. The Russo Bros are smart enough to recognize that, so put your money on Black Widow to do what double agents do naturally…

With all these characters, it is easy to forget that this is in fact a Captain America, not an Avengers sequel. So let’s take a look at who will be backing up the leading man.

Team Rogers

Falcon

While War Machine is Iron Man’s right-hand man, Falcon can always be found on the Captain’s left. The legend of Falcon is subtly growing in the MCU, after making memorable appearances in The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and surprising audiences this summer in Ant-Man. It should also be noted that in both films this summer, he was involved in the pursuit of the Winter Soldier. It is safe to assume that he and Bucky, will have a heavy presence in this movie.

The Winter Soldier

If previous reports are true, Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier might be the macguffin of Civil War. Instead of everyone chasing down a magical stone that can “end the universe.” They could possibly all be pursuing the soldier turned brain-washed, cybernetic assassin (don’t you hate it when that happens). Captain will surely want to find his former friend and rehabilitate him. While if rumors are correct, Tony Stark may go on a warpath when he finds out Winter Soldier murdered his father, Howard Stark. This could get interesting…

Hawkeye

This is one of the most surprising inclusions. Not simply because this is only a guy with a bow and arrow, but because he seemingly left superheroics, to be with the wife and kids at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. In any case, it is interesting that he and Black Widow are on opposing sides (at least initially.) Also the Russo Bros previously explained that they had cancelled plans to have a chase scene with Hawkeye pursuing Rogers, in The Winter Soldier. (Read all about it here.) Perhaps, they have a new take on the scene, since they already spilled the beans previously. Plus, we all have our fingers crossed that are able to squeeze an iconic shot of Ant-Man on Hawkeye’s arrow ready to be fired.

Scarlet Witch

Much like the Vision is the heavy-hitter and almost magical game-changer for Team Stark, the same can be said of the Scarlet Witch for Team Rogers. As was shown in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she has mind-altering powers that can level the playing field. It will be interesting to see how her character has grown after the immense loss of her brother. It isn’t clear what function she has in the plot. But if speculation is correct, Marvel could be positioning her for another film later that year, in Doctor Strange

Ant-Man

While his impact this summer at the box-office wasn’t record-breaking, the Ant-Man character firmly found his way into the fabric of the Marvel cinematic universe. The only Avenger that he knows is Falcon, so it is clear where his allegiance will lie. Plus, he is one of the few masked heroes, with a concealed identity in the MCU. He already fought against the establishment (and even went to jail for it), he will clearly be the thief, comic relief, and maybe even the giant, that Captain America might need.

The Wild Card

It has already been confirmed by Marvel that Black Panther will not be choosing sides in the conflict…necessarily. We know that in the film he is on an independent mission, which may or may not involve his father, according to recent rumors. It is likely that whatever actions he takes in the film, will have a big impact on each side of the battle. From the fanfare that Marvel made last year when they introduced Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, it seems that we can expect a majestic introduction of the Wakandan to the MCU next year.

Official Synopsis:

“Captain America: Civil War” returns Chris Evans as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America along with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Paul Rudd will make his first appearance alongside the Avengers as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in “Civil War.”

The cast of the film also includes Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Martin Freeman.

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6th, 2016.
