When Lionsgate teamed up with Saban Entertainment to reboot the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger TV series, no one knew exactly what to expect. The movie studio has found a lot of success with the young adult market thanks to such franchises as The Hunger Games. So many were unsure of the direction and tone that would be struck when the movie finally went before cameras.
The studio has already announce the new leads who will be portraying the five key members of the Power Rangers. They are RJ Cyler, Becky G, Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery and Ludi Lin, who are all relatively unknowns. The movie is set to be directed by another up and comer, Dean Israelite, who cut his teeth with the found footage film, Project Almanac. However, none of these developments were enough to generate excitement or instill confidence in the project. Today, actress Elizabeth Banks took to Twitter and announced her participation in the Power Rangers movie with a single tweet.
After 10,000 years, I’m free! It’s time to conquer Earth!!⚡️ Time to play pic.twitter.com/ouzd2BtkUI

The role that Banks is referring to is that of Rita Repulsa, the antagonist to the Power Rangers, who happens to be a witch from outer space. Banks is also uniquely qualified to pull off the comedy and camp elements that are so closely linked to the character and show. Her role as Effie Trinket in the Hunger Games franchise showed off her ability to play a larger than life character, that still has edges of insanity under the surface.
It will be interesting to see the world that Israelite is creating and only then will we be able to gauge the casting. There is a lot more to come on the new reboot of the Power Rangers franchise, so keep checking back.
Power Rangers opens on January 13th, 2017.
