Marvel’s first television show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., had trouble finding its voice when it debuted in the fall of 2013. Before the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier changed the dynamics, many were wondering if the show would ever find its footing. In the second season, Marvel began paying off a lot of the seeds that they had planted by embracing the comic book roots of the show and by expanding the cast with more veteran actors, including Nick Blood, Henry Simmons, and film actress Adrianne Palicki, which gave the show even more legitimacy.
There were rumors last year that Marvel had intentions to make a spin-off, featuring Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird. However, the series’ development seemingly ended, while everyone’s attention moved from network TV to Marvel’s Netflix shows, such as Daredevil. Well it seems that the show was real and is now in advanced levels of development. Variety has reported that ABC has ordered a pilot for a show starring Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter and Adrianne Palicki’s Mockingbird. Here is how they describe the show.
Insiders say the series is not a spinoff, per se, but rather an entirely new project solely focused on the two characters to continue their story. Though plot details are scarce at this point, “Marvel’s Most Wanted” will follow the pair and their adventures together.
It will be interesting to see how this affects Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which undeniably benefited from Palicki’s presence on the show. Before Skye was reborn as Daisy Johnson aka Quake, Mockingbird was the only legitimate comic book hero on the roster and Palicki was the only legitimate star on the show as well. It is curious why they wouldn’t simply beef up her role on the show, but it signals that there are big plans in store for Marvel’s Most Wanted.
Hunter and Mockingbird play on and off again lovers, so clearly ABC is envisioning a Mr. and Mrs. Smith style spy show. It is a little disappointing because Palicki is more than capable of carrying the show herself and Blood’s character really does not add much to mix. The title of the show, Marvel’s Most Wanted, is an indication that the show could be a platform to spotlight various lower level Marvel characters, that don’t fit into the world of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Which has been increasingly embracing the more fantastic side of the MCU and diving head-first into the world of the Inhumans.
What isn’t clear is why this show is necessary. Marvel’s Most Wanted being described as “an entirely new project,” sounds as if they are trying to distance themselves from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. slightly. In order to truly do that, the show will need a dramatically different tone and look, particularly since the two shows will be airing on the same network. While it certainly doesn’t have to be as dark as Daredevil, that show was refreshing for audiences because it took chances with the material and made it mature. Which are two elements that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., certainly is not known for. The show only got a pilot order, but it has the Marvel/Disney machine behind it, so expect to eventually see it on the screen. We will be sure to bring you more as the story develops.
