Do you like the CW’s Arrow and The Flash TV shows? Do you really, really, really like The Flash and Arrow shows? Well it seems that Arrow producers, Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg. and Marc Guggenheim, are about to test the limits of their audience’s affection for the two respective series. They have been working on a spin-off featuring key supporting characters from both shows. Here are some of the details according to a report from Deadline.
“The untitled project, now in development, is described as a superhero team-up show. Routh, Miller and Garber will reprise their popular DC Comics characters — Arrow‘s Ray Palmer/The Atom (Routh), Flash villain Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Miller), and Flash‘s Dr. Martin Stein (Garber). Because her Arrow character Sara Lance was killed off, with her sister Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) taking over as the Black Canary, it is unclear whether Lotz will play the same or new superhero…the new project will include three major DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a TV series.”
All four of the characters mentioned above have had extended, multi-episode arcs on their respective shows. Of the four characters mentioned, Wentworth’s Cold has proven to be the most villainous. However, he has toed the line between good and bad in the comics, so he figures to be a mastermind and wild card of the group.
There had been rumors of Routh’s Atom getting his own show for months. It seems that the brain trust thought it would be better to create a superhero team to help carry the load. Also mentioned in the report, that there would be three more well-known DC characters to appear on the show, however their identities were not revealed. The untitled show will probably not be ready for a fall debut, but expect to see it as a mid-season replacement in early 2016.
It is fair to wonder if CW is pressing their luck with yet another show. By using the supporting cast from Arrow and The Flash they could be cannibalizing their own success. This scoop comes on the heels of news that Andrew Kreisberg has been confirmed as joining the writing staff over at CBS’ Supergirl as well. Suddenly it is clear that DC Entertainment is aggressively building a fully cohesive DC Comics’ television universe, which will even cross networks.
