ASSASSIN’S CREED Trailer: The Video Game Movie Genre’s Best Hope Has Arrived

For the third time this year, a video game movie is stepping up to the plate to try and legitimize the genre. The first up to bat was The Angry Birds, which was a solid base hit by grossing over $100 million dollars domestically. It was followed by the release of Warcraft, that will ultimately go down in the history books as one of the biggest domestic bombs of the year. Hopefully, they saved the best for last, as this December the year will close out with the highly anticipated adaptation of Assassin’s Creed

The smash hit video game series has sold over 80 million units in the franchise’s history and is being adapted for the big screen by director Justin Kurzel (MacBeth), while being headlined by Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse). The movie also features a supporting cast of Marion Cottilard (Allied), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), and Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), who should all serve to help ground the heightened sci-fi elements inherent in the story.

The newest trailer gives viewers their biggest glimpse into the story and world of Assassin’s Creed. In the film, Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, who’s abducted and forced through a program that lets him relive his ancestor’s genetic memories and effectively alter the outcome of history. Fortunately for action movie fans, his ancestor is a highly trained fighter from the Assassin’s Guild during the Spanish Inquisition. While the first trailer received jeers for it’s use of Kanye West song, they substitute it for yet another modern soundtrack jingle, over giving a preview of the movie’s actual score.

It’s hard to not be impressed with the film’s visual palette and practical stunts. In a previous featurette, the film’s largest feat was showcased. As a stuntman plunged over 125 feet through the air, which is the longest movie jump in over 35 years. It is looking more like this isn’t just the video game movie to look out for this season, but one of the better offerings at the theaters this winter. We will find out in two short months. Enjoy.

Official Synopsis:

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed opens on December 21st, 2016.
