One of the most surprising and logical castings of the recent past was Ben Affleck winning the role as the new Batman. The previous franchise, The Dark Knight trilogy, set a high bar in the portrayal of Bruce Wayne. What made director Christopher Nolan’s cinematic portrayal of Batman unique, is that he did a deeper character study of the actual character of Bruce Wayne, then in any other medium besides the comics. Even that is debatable. Add to the fact that Academy Award winning actor Christian Bale threw himself into the role with reckless abandon and you have a classic cinematic portrayal.

The casting of Affleck initially raised eyebrows since his previous run at a playing a comic book hero in Daredevil, was not a success. It certainly can be argued that the film was not Affleck’s fault but the director’s vision, however this didn’t stop fanboy venom from flowing freely all over the internet. In a recent interview with EW, Affleck opened up about fanboy outcries and what gives him confidence in the upcoming blockbuster:

Before I took the role, Warner Bros. gave me a bunch of past reactions to casting and said, “Are you sure you want to get into this? This is part and parcel of these movies now. There’s a lot of active fans with a lot of opinions.” To me, having been through a certain amount of that, it doesn’t really… Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I wouldn’t have taken the part if I didn’t trust my instincts in terms of the filmmaking. I think Chris Terrio wrote a terrific script. Zack’s a great visual director. And there’s an interesting take. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think I could do it. I have the benefit of a lot of that understanding.

This is more than encouraging. What Affleck is basically saying is that if fanboys could see the script, designs and pre-viz of what they are putting together, a lot of the outcries would die down. However he is aware that in order to win over the support he has to fully throw himself into the role.

Affleck isn’t just an actor, but a writer and director, he is a storyteller. He seems to understand www.buyingphenterminenow.com that in order for the audience to buy into a performance, they have to believe the character on-screen is authentic. Affleck describes how he is training for the role to bring to life a realistic Bruce Wayne and Batman:

I can tell you that every time I do a role, it’s the responsibility of an actor to get their physical self as close to the role as possible. And Batman’s obviously got a set of expectations that are tough. So I spent a lot of time working out. And it’s a far cry from Gone Girl where my character is described as “puffy and hungover.” I want you to know I worked equally hard at both! [laughs]

The fact that Affleck is a lifetime comic book and Batman fan, should give solace to fans that he understands the character and what entails bringing this new version to the big screen. He is also acutely aware of what these comic and cinematic heroes mean culturally to Americans:

You know what? It’s great that people do care that much. They want to see the movie that much. And it is incumbent on you to honor the story. There are the Greek myths and these are the American myths. The American myths are these superheroes. People care about ‘em a lot. And it’s incumbent on you to do a good job and make it as excellent as you possibly can. At the end of the day, the movie’s all that matters.

The level of confidence that Affleck has in Dawn of Justice is apparent and is exciting to consider where they are taking the character of Batman. We are getting a different and maybe the closest we have seen to the comic book portrayal of the Caped Crusader ever. Affleck has been flawless in the projects that he has chosen as a director and writer. While he isn’t in that capacity officially, he has brought on Chris Terrio (Argo) to rewrite the script and every leaked piece of imagery from the film does look amazing.
