Box Office Report – ANNABELLE: CREATION Breaks the Dollhouse Ceiling

The horror genre continues to prove that it may have the strongest punch, pound for pound, in the movie industry. From late summer through the Fall, horror flicks with small budgets make huge sums of money and a leader in that trend has been The Conjuring franchise. The fourth installment – and second spin-off in the series – Annabelle: Creation continued to carry the baton in this past weekend’s box-office race.

Annabelle: Creation had an estimated $35 million debut in its opening weekend, which is made even more impressive when considering the film was produced on a meager $15 million dollar budget. This news has significance for fans of the DCEU as well. David F. Sandberg directed the latest hit, along with one of last year’s biggest surprise hit thrillers, Lights Out. His next project is the adaptation of Shazam, the light-hearted tale of a boy whose wish is granted and becomes a Superman-like hero. It will be interesting to see how he handles the shift in tone, but his hire by Warner Bros gains clarity as Sandberg is now a proven moneymaker.

Dunkirk has sneakily become one of the larger blockbusters this summer season. Christopher Nolan’s latest effort, a recreation of the WWII battle of Dunkirk, crossed the $150 million mark domestically after a weekend in which the film grossed an estimated $10.9 million dollars. The movie is in its fourth week of release and lost only 36% of the previous weekend’s audience, so expect for the movie to hang in the top five throughout the remainder of the month.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature made its debut this past weekend with an estimated $$8.3 million dollars. The animated sequel’s budget has yet to be revealed, but after opening in over 4,000 theaters, it’s clear that it has the scent of a bomb all over it. With little buzz to carry it, look for the movie to drop sharply over the next few weeks.

Fourth place belonged to The Dark Tower which continues its disappointing run with an estimated $7.8 million dollars in its second week of release. The movie has made just over $30 million dollars domestically against a $60 million dollar budget. It lost 59% of the opening weekend’s audience and with grand plans for sequels and spin-off television shows is surely on shaky ground now.

Rounding out the top five spots was Girls Trip, which continues to impress in its fourth week of release with an estimated $6.4 million dollars. The  movie was produced for less than $20 million dollars and is now poised to cross the $100 million dollar mark in the next week. This certainly is the break out comedy of the summer.
