Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the box-office again by means of natural selection. In its first week, The Purge: Anarchy came in second place with $28.4 million. The sequel to the hit tale about scheduled anarchy was made on a very low budget, so this franchise has been hugely profitable for Universal and Platinum Dunes. Disney’s spin-off of the Cars franchise, Planes: Fire & Rescue, debuted in third place with an anemic $18 million. However, the Cars/Planes franchise makes a huge amount in merchandising, so it will go on indefinitely. Jason Segal and Cameron Diaz’s Sex Tape, failed to attract much attention coming in fourth place with $15 million. And rounding out the top five is Transformers: Age of Extinction.
