Hopefully you had a great holiday weekend. Now welcome back to reality! Let’s talk dollars and cents! And why is money important? Because that’s what keeps the Hollywood sign lit up! The Thanksgiving weekend was good for the box-office as most of the previously released films held on to a majority of their audiences. While the new movies that debuted over the weekend…did not fair as well.
The Thanksgiving holiday was good to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay pt 1. The film managed to retain over 50% of its audience in its second week, by pulling in $56.8 million dollars to add to its hefty debut from the past weekend.
The animated spin-off Penguins of Madagascar debuted in second place, with $25.8 million dollars in its first week of release. This number fell far below the debut of the first three installments of the series whose opening weekends ranged from $47-$63 million dollars.
Big Hero 6 lost less than 7% of its audience from last week with $18.7 million dollars. Kids had a couple of extra days off and it looks like they ran back to theaters to see the Disney animated hit one more time.
Interstellar only lost 3% of it’s previous audience as it made another $15.8 million dollars, as fans are still trying to figure out Christopher Nolan’s ending to the film. This is a signal that the film will be a topic of movie conversations for a time to come.
Coming in fifth place was Horrible Bosses 2 with a disappointing debut of $15.7 million dollars. The original made over $28 million dollars when it was released during the summer of 2011.
