Box Office Report – Big Interstellar Hero Weekend

After a dry fall season, people came back to movie theaters this past weekend in full force. Two films opened with over $45 million dollars out of the gate and it seems that there is a movie for everyone’s taste waiting for them.

Big-Hero-6-3

Disney and Marvel’s first direct collaboration was a success on many levels (check out our review), as Big Hero 6 debuted in first place. The animated tale of a boy and his robot has been performing well with critics and general audiences. It looks like another win for Disney Animation as this is the latest in a string of successes, including Frozen and Wreck-It-Ralph.

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar came in second with an estimated $47.5 million dollar opening. The film slightly underperformed in many industry insider’s box-office projections, however the movie has already made over $80 million dollars overseas as well. So it is far from a failure or even a disappointment. It just hasn’t seem to have caught on the way, for example, Nolan’s Inception did.

Gone Girl climbed back up into the third position after spending last week in fourth. The movie continues to have incredible legs and made another $6.2 million dollars in its fifth week of release.

Ouija is still hanging on with $5.8 million dollars. The film is benefiting from a scarcity of horror movies.

And Fury continues to show it has tread on its tires with $5.6 million dollars in its fourth week.
