Box Office Report – BOO! MADEA Takes Down JACK REACHER

Over the past weekend, another movie from the MCU completely dominated at the box-office. However, it isn’t all that surprising, considering the Madea Cinematic Universe has been crushing its competition for years.

Tyler Perry’s latest offering, Boo! A Madea Halloween topped Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back for first place at the this weekend’s box-office. Both films are sequels and proves that modern-day franchise filmmaking comes in all sizes and shapes.

Boo! A Madea Halloween opened with an estimated $27.6 million dollars. The movie is the ninth film in the series that began with 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman. While Perry has always enjoyed the support of a dedicated fan base, this latest release proved to expand its audience in new ways. Previous Madea releases had audiences made up of 80 to 90 percent African-American audiences. This weekend’s release was down to only 60 percent, with the difference being made up of Caucasians and Latinos, according to Variety.  A positive signal that Madea is still growing in popularity.

Second place belonged to Jack Reacher: Never Go Backwhich certainly didn’t embarrass itself with it’s reported $23 million dollar opening. The original film had a $15.2 million dollar debut in 2014, so it’s a respectable number for Paramount. However, it’s easy to imagine that the studio and Cruise had their eyes on a first place debut.

The top three was rounded out with yet another new release, Ouija: Origin of Evil. The sequel was hoping to be another movie positively affected by the upcoming Halloween holiday and it seems to have paid off. The movie narrowly took the third spot with an estimated $14.06 million dollar take in its first week.

Fourth place belonged to The Accountant, which had a healthy second weekend with an estimated $14.02 million dollars. Regardless of where the movie is eventually placed, WB must be pleased with the film’s drop of only 43% after the debut weekend. It seems as if word of mouth is helping to keep the Ben Affleck film going. We should expect to see the movie around the top ten for a few more weeks.

Rounding out the top five is The Girl on the Train, which has quietly done nice business for Universal. The movie made an estimated $7.2 million dollars in its third week of release. This is also a good sign for Emily Blunt as she warms up for her anticipated role of Mary Poppins, in the upcoming sequel.

Here is the complete box-office breakdown for the weekend of October 21st-23rd, 2016.
