In an age where movies are only big until the next weekend comes around, Captain America: The Winter Solider has found a way to dominate the month of April. In what was seen as a somewhat risky move, Marvel Studios released their movie in April, a month earlier than blockbuster films are typically shown. It has paid off. The Marvel film held onto the #1 spot for the third week in a row, with an estimated $26 million. Coming in second was Rio 2 pulling in over $22 million in its second week of release. Heaven is for Real had an unexpected debut with an estimated $21 million. The big disappointment and flop of the weekend was the Johnny Depp vehicle, Transcendence, it pulled in an anemic $11 million in its debut weekend. This should have ripples throughout the industry, since this is the second Depp summer movie to under perform following The Lone Ranger. Marlon Wayan’s sequel A Haunted House 2 had a $9 million dollar opening weekend, but those films typically have low budgets which shouldn’t be as big a hit to the studio. This is a good sign for lovers of comic book movies. And a sure sign that there will be many more to come. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in a little less than two weeks in the US, however it is already doing huge business overseas. The comedy The Other Woman and Paul Walker’s Brick Mansions open this weekend, so it is not out of the question for Marvel to dominate the entire month.
