With a marketing campaign as creative and forward-thinking as the one for Deadpool, it was clear that the movie would dominate the Valentine’s Day weekend. However, no one was expecting the movie to break all records for a rated-R movie. Deadpool had an estimated $132 million dollar domestic debut, while opening to over $260 million dollars worldwide. It destroyed the previous record held by The Matrix Revolutions, with $91.7 million dollars in 2003 and is the largest X-Men related opening of Fox’s history. Fans of Deadpool and R-rated superhero films should rejoice and be wary, as this should open the doors for a host of off-center projects.
Kung Fu Panda 3 added another impressive $19.8 million dollars to its total, while losing only about 7% of its audience from the previous week. Dreamworks’ animated sequel continues to fill the void of children’s entertainment at the movies right now. The animated film looks poised to pass the $100 million dollar mark over the course of this week, while continuing to be a strong draw well into March.
How To Be Single took advantage of the Valentine’s Day holiday with an impressive debut. The romantic comedy starring Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann, certainly overachieved with an estimated $17.9 million dollar weekend. The movie has an estimated budget of $38 million dollars and will be a huge money earner for Warner Bros. this season.
Debuting in fourth place was the sequel, Zoolander 2, which proved to have missed its window of relevancy after a 15 year gap since the original’s release. Add to the fact that the movie received scathing reviews and it seems that the sequel was lucky to earn an estimated $13.9 million dollars over the weekend. However, expect the movie to plummet in its second week as it is going head-to-head with a superior comedy in Deadpool.
Rounding out the top five was The Revenant, which continues to draw audiences in its eighth week of release. The revenge thriller made another estimated $6.6 million dollars over the holiday weekend. The Academy Awards are less than two weeks away, so expect the buzz to keep the movie in the public eye at least into March.
