This was a big weekend for video game movies as The Angry Birds Movie had a surprisingly strong opening at the box-office. The animated film opened in first place taking the top spot from Marvel’s blockbuster, Captain America: Civil War, with an estimated $39 million dollar debut. This is a positive sign for those looking to gauge the viability of video game adaptations in the marketplace and for Rovio who already had established the merchandising power of their brand. This certainly isn’t the last we have seen of the birds.
Captain America: Civil War fell to second place in its third week of release. The hit Marvel film made an estimated $33.1 million dollars over the past weekend, while pushing its worldwide total over the one billion dollar mark. It seems that the movie has one more strong week before the release of X-Men: Apocalypse, that should eat into some of the Captain’s audience. However, don’t feel bad, as the movie is officially the highest grossing film of 2016.
Seth Rogen’s sequel, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, opened in third place with an estimated $21.7 million dollars. The debut was certainly a disappointment for Universal, as the original Neighbors had a $49 million dollar opening in 2014. The movie should serve as good counterprogramming against all the action blockbusters in theaters, so it will be worth watching if the film has legs over the next few weeks.
The Nice Guys had a decent debut with an estimated $11.2 million dollars over the past weekend. Shane Black’s buddy comedy throwback managed to carve out its niche and settled into fourth place, just narrowly edging out The Jungle Book. It will be interesting to see if the movie will draw return audiences during the month of May.
Coming in fifth place was The Jungle Book, which managed to stay in the top five spots for its sixth week in a row. Disney’s smash hit made another estimated $11 million dollars and continues to prove the studio still has the magic touch.
