Box Office Report – The Expendables Bomb Due To Turtle Power

There is officially no doubting the power of the turtle. For the second weekend in a row Platinum Dunes’ reboot of the popular brand, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, finished in first pulling in an estimated $28.4 million dollars. More impressively it held off two new entries and the juggernaut Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s space adventure came in second with $24.7 million dollars, in it’s third week of release. The film crossed the $200 million dollar mark domestically which qualifies it as a blockbuster. Let’s Be Cops was a mild surprise in third place with $17.7 million dollars in its first week. The big disappointment over the weekend was The Expendables 3, which debuted in fourth place with an anemic $16.2 million dollars. That qualifies as a bomb, especially when you factor the star power involved in the production. Depending on how the film performs overseas, this could signal the end for the nostalgic franchise. Coming in fifth place was the YA adaptation, The Giver, with $12.8 million dollars. Here is the complete weekend breakdown for 8/15-8/17:
