In its second week of release, Gone Girl held off the vampire origin tale, Dracula Untold, over the past weekend. The David Fincher directed thriller pulled another $26.8 million dollars by managing to retain over 70% of its audience from the previous weekend. Typically films drop 50% or more in their second weekend of release. Gone Girl’s strong second weekend speaks to a movie with a strong word-of-mouth buzz and repeat viewers.
Dracula Untold had a decent opening with $23.5 million dollars in its first weekend. Surely this was a slightly underwhelming figure for Universal who plan to use this film as a jumping off point for their monster horror-verse. The Steve Carell family film, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, debuted with $19.1 million dollars, the only kid-friendly entry in the top five. Fourth place belonged to Annabelle, which made $16.4 million dollars for the horror movie spin-off of The Conjuring. Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t able to drown out the negative buzz around his film The Judge. The courtroom drama made $13.3 million dollars in its first week.
