At the end of the day, the people behind Goosebumps will be able to boast that their film opened up in first place. However, it just narrowly stole the top spot by a slim $2 million dollar margin, with an estimated $23.5 million dollars in its debut weekend. The family-oriented horror movie is based on the popular R.L. Stine books and actually has a large fanbase. Despite its first place finish, the opening was not a huge success for Sony, since the announced budget stands at around $58 million dollars and that is without marketing costs. It will be interesting to see if it can hang on to its audience in the second week.
Coming in second place is The Martian, with an estimated $21.5 million dollars in its third week of release. The science-fiction drama has held up well, especially considering there were other selections this weekend that should have posed a bigger threat. Clearly, audiences know what they like.
Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks teamed up again for their latest film, Bridge of Spies. The movie made an estimated $15.3 million dollars in its first week of release. In years past, their collaboration would have been the cause of great fanfare. Perhaps this speaks to a growing trend in the film business that Spielberg has frequently mentioned, where certain types of films are losing their relevance at the theaters.
Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak opened with an estimated $12.8 million dollars in its debut weekend. This number has to be a huge disappointment for both the director and Legendary. It will be worth watching what is in store next for the visionary director. There are several projects floating around Hollywood that seem to be tailor made for his skillset, like the growing DC Comics universe or even Godzilla vs Kong. However, it will be worth watching if del Toro decides (or is forced) to play in smaller sandboxes instead, where he has had some of his biggest successes.
Rounding out the top five is the surprising hit, Hotel Transylvania 2, which continues to dominate in its fourth week of release. The animated family film made another estimated another estimated $12.2 million dollars over the past weekend. Expect to see it hang around the top ten for a few more weeks.
