Wow. There have been some surprising blockbusters over the past six months or so, that have defied industry predictions and logic. In late 2014 and well into spring of this year, American Sniper destroyed even the most hopeful projections on its way to a $350 domestic gross. Furious 7 overcame dramatic odds and became this year’s first billion dollar global blockbuster. That was followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was another billion dollar worldwide success.
It seems that 2015 is the year of the billion dollar movie and Jurassic World looks as if it doesn’t want to disappoint. In its first weekend, Jurassic World set a new record by making over $5oo million dollars worldwide. In the States, it managed the second largest domestic opening of all-time with an estimated $204.6 million, falling only slightly behind The Avengers. Clearly everyone underestimated the drawing power of dinosaurs.
(Update) Box Office Mojo has reworked their numbers and and Jurassic World is the largest domestic opening as well, with $208.8 million dollars over the weekend.
Spy slid down a spot in its second week of release. The comedic action film managed to hold on to a considerable amount of its audience with an estimated $15.6 million dollars. Word-of-mouth has been surprisingly positive on the Melissa McCarthy vehicle which has had a steady run so far.
San Andreas lost considerable ground in its third week, with another estimated $10.8 million dollars added to its total. Jurassic World surely ate into The Rock’s fanbase and audience causing a hefty drop. The movie is still seen as a success and should hang around the top-5 for another week or so.
Insidious Chapter 3 plunged a precipitous 67% in its second week in theaters. The horror film was clearly affected by Jurassic World and for being a sub-par horror film by most people’s account. It made an estimated $7.3 million dollars in week number two. It looks as if it will struggle to cross the $50 million dollar mark by the end of its run.
Once again Pitch Perfect 2 continues to attract audiences in its fifth week and made another estimated $6.3 million dollars to add to its hefty total. The gears are already in motion for a third installment so get ready for more Pitches.
