It wasn’t a big surprise that the movie with the largest opening ever, would stay on top its second week of release. What is surprising is how much competition it had. Jurassic World followed up its history-making debut with a weekend that would make any other movie short of Star Wars: The Force Awakens happy. The monster movie made another $106.5 million dollars in its second week, which pushed its domestic gross over the $400 million dollar mark. The movie has surprisingly strong legs and it will be interesting to see where it ends up in the history books.
Inside Out had the largest opening ever for an original property with $90.4 million dollars. It bested the previous record holder, Avatar, who had a $77 million dollar opening. It is an amazing achievement for an animated or live-action property, whose impact is being overshadowed by the immense success of Jurassic World.
The Ghostbusters reboot began shooting this past week and it seems that Spy is benefiting from the buzz, as well as from positive audience scores. The action-comedy made another $11.2 million dollars in its third week of release, pushing the total gross over $75 million dollars domestically.
San Andreas hung around in the fourth spot by pulling another $8.7 million dollars, while losing less than 20% of the previous weekend’s take. It has managed to hang in the top four spots for the past month proving it has blockbuster legs.
The second biggest surprise of the weekend was Dope cracking the top five with $6.1 million dollars. The urban coming-of-age drama has been receiving rave reviews and should manage to hang around the top ten for the next few weeks with business generated from positive word of mouth.
