In one of the closest box-office races in some time, it looks as if Jurassic World has narrowly held on to the top spot at the box-office. The monstrous blockbuster made an estimated $30.9 million dollars over the weekend, staying in first place for the fourth week in a row. Family audiences were split down the middle between Jurassic World and Inside Out over the 4th of July holiday weekend.
The runner-up Inside Out, managed to make an estimated $30.1 million dollars in its third week of release. Pixar’s film looks to cross the $250 million dollar domestic mark in a matter of days. The animated film truly has become a phenomenon, while securing Pixar’s status as industry leaders.
It looks as if the producers of Terminator: Genisys, had been talking about their plans to create a new trilogy a little prematurely. Audiences took heed to negative early reviews and warnings from disappointed fans of the franchise, by largely staying away from the latest installment. The movie had the lowest opening of any Terminatorfilm since 1984, with an estimated $28.7 million dollars over the weekend. It is a pretty sad day for a once proud franchise. In about three years the rights revert back to James Cameron, who clearly is the only one qualified to make a Terminator movie. It is looking as if Arnold’s last shot at bring back his former glory will be the in development King Conan movie, if the studio continues to go forward with the project.
The other disappointing debut over the weekend was Magic Mike XXL, with an anemic $11.6 million dollars. The sequel’s take fell well below the $39 million dollar opening of the original movie. It seems that audiences were turned off by the franchise.
Coming in fifth place was Ted 2, which had a huge 67%, drop from the previous week’s totals. The comedy made an estimated $11 million dollars over the weekend, sealing it’s fate as another miscue on Seth McFarlane’s film resume.
