The month of December is here and there was a wide variety of options at local movie theaters. Despite losing a precipitous 64% of its previous weekend’s audience The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 held on to first place for its third consecutive week. The final chapter (for now) in the film series made another estimated $18.6 million dollars at the box-office. It also looks as if the underwhelming final installment will wind up crossing the $250 million domestic mark in the next few weeks.
Krampus was the big surprise of the weekend, as audience’s curiosity was clearly peaked by the holiday horror film. The movie made an estimated $16 dollars in its first weekend of release. It has an estimated production budget of $15 million dollars, so surely Universal Studios is pleased by the film’s reception.
The standout drama Creed managed to narrowly sneak past The Good Dinosaur for a third place finish. The Rocky spin-off made an estimated $15.54 million dollars, while expanding its theater count in its second week of release. Expect the film to hang in the top ten throughout the month.
Falling to fourth place was The Good Dinosaur, which made an estimated $15.51 million dollars. What is most alarming is that the animated family film fell an estimated 60% in its second week, which is an alarming figure. Fortunately with the early success of Inside Out, the sting of the The Good Dinosaur’s mediocre performance won’t hurt as much for Pixar.
Spectre spent its final week in the top five, as it squeezed out another estimated $5.4 million dollars in its fifth week of release. It should be interesting to see what direction that they take the next installment of the James Bond series, since it seems that this iteration is beginning to lose creative steam.
