Box Office Report – KUNG FU PANDA 3 Wins the Weekend Box-Office Tournament

Kung Fu Panda 3 sneaked into theaters this past weekend and managed to steal first place at the box-office like a ninja in the night. Dreamworks managed to score another first place finish after the surprising success of last year’s Home. Kung Fu Panda 3 made an estimated $41 million dollars in its opening weekend, a huge drop-off from the $60 million dollar opening of the original film. However, there won’t be much competition in February in the animation department, so we can expect to see it hang around the top ten for some time.

Coming in second was the movie that will not die… The Revenant clawed its way to an estimated $12.4 million dollar weekend in its sixth week of release. It only lost about 22% of the previous week’s audience, who seem to not get enough of the grizzly survival tale. With the Academy Awards a few weeks away, this movie should continue selling tickets for weeks to come.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens made another estimated $10.7 million dollars over the past weekend. It is poised to cross the $900 million dollar domestic mark this week, which is a record that continues to be readjusted. It will be interesting to see if Disney begins marketing Star Wars: Rogue One while The Force Awakens is still in theaters, which could conceivably give the movie a further boost.

The Finest Hours debuted in fourth place with an estimated $10.3 million dollars. The dramatic open-ocean thriller stars Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) and Casey Affleck (Triple 9) in the film based on real events. The movie opened in over 3000 theaters, yet failed to draw general audiences which is a signal that the studio was hoping for greater things.

Rounding out the top five is Ride Along 2. The Kevin Hart and Ice Cube led action-comedy made another estimated $8.3 million dollars and has made more than $70 million dollars in its third week of release.
