Last week Madea shocked the world with an unexpected $27 million dollar opening of Boo! A Madea Halloween and the old grandma is up to her antics again. The holiday movie retained the top spot at the box-office over the Halloween weekend with an estimated $16.6 million dollar gross.
In just two weeks it has made it well over $52 million dollars on a $20 million production budget. What’s even more impressive is that it lost only about 41% of the opening weekend’s audience. That means ticket buyers are returning and bringing first time viewers with them as well. It’s doubly surprising considering the film’s low 23% Rotten Tomato score. However, next week it’s sure to hit a wall in the form of Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
In the second place was Ron Howard’s Inferno. While the movie was expected to have a modest domestic opening, it was seen as a relative lock for first place. The movie made an estimated $15 million dollars in its first weekend, which is abysmal when you consider the success of Sully last month. However, it has already done big business overseas, already making almost $140 million dollars, due to its international cast and shooting locations.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hung onto third place with an estimated $9.5 million dollars in its second week of release. The movie currently has the widest release of any film in theaters and will lose a lot of screens next week with the coming of Doctor Strange. So expect to see the sequel drop off significantly, but stay in the top ten for the next few weeks.
The Accountant squeezed out another estimated $8.4 million dollars in its third week of release. It has now totaled over $60 million dollars and looks to be a profitable film for Warner Bros.
Fifth place belonged to Ouija: Origin of Evil, which made another estimated $7 million dollars in its second week of release. Despite having above average reviews, the movie has not been a huge hit for the holiday season. However, it’s yet another example of how profitable horror movies can be for studios.
