Box Office Report – Maleficent Puts the Competition to Sleep

Maleficent took the number one spot over the past weekend garnering an estimated $70 million dollar in its opening weekend. It knocked last weekend’s champ, X-Men: Days of the Future Past into second place with about $32.6 million in it’s second week of release. This is a huge drop from the first weekend of over 60%, however it’s not necessarily a reflection of the film’s high quality, but more a sign of the cannibalistic summer movie season. The most disappointing debut was A Million Ways to Die in the West. Seth McFarlane’s second live-action effort made about $17 million in it’s first week of release. It seems that this was placed as R-rated counter-programming to the major releases, however it looks like this film may have been better suited for a less crowded late summer slot. Godzilla came in fourth with an approximate $12 million dollar pull. And coming in fifth was the Adam Sandler film Blended, with an estimated $8 million.
