The decision from Paramount to move Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’s release date up nearly 6 months, continues to pay dividends in shocking ways. The critical and audience reception is through the roof and with its release coming at the end of July. It has now capitalized on the monumental disaster that Fox has on its hands with the release of the Fantastic Four. The long-running spy franchise managed to make another estimated $29.4 million dollars at the box-office in it’s second week and looks to continue strong through the month of August.
Coming in second place is one of the most shocking box-office weekends in comic book movie history. Fantastic Four opened with a dismal $26.2 million dollars. Which is bad by any superhero movie’s standards, much less a franchise whose previous two installments had first weekend openings of no less than $56 million dollars. And those two films are complete garbage. This has put Fox in a very uncomfortable and public position, as they decide the future of the franchise. Will they forge ahead with plans for a (smaller budgeted) sequel and eventual team up with the X-Men? Or will they cave into a growing public demand for them to sign the rights over to the MCU? Fox is definitely on the hot seat.
The Gift had a surprisingly strong debut in third place. The thriller directed and starring Joel Edgerton and Jason Bateman managed a $12 million dollar opening, which might not sound impressive, until the movie’s $5 million dollar production is taken into consideration. In addition, the movie is getting very strong word of mouth.
Vacation fell to fourth place in its second week, however the comedy managed to hang on to a large amount of previous week’s audience after a disappointing debut of its own. The Griswold comedy made another $9.1 million dollars over the past weekend, as it looks as if it will fall out of the top five next week.
Coming in fifth was Ant-Man, making another $7.8 million dollars in its fifth week of release. The Marvel Studios action-comedy definitely has a strong following and is generating multiple repeat viewings. We will see the true impact of this movie next year when Captain America: Civil War is released.
