Box Office Report – PITCH PERFECT 2 Rolls Over the FURY ROAD

It is officially the summer movie season and people are flocking to theaters. The top three films offered a buffet of counter-programming, that totaled over $150 million dollars in ticket sales over the three day period.

Unsurprisingly Pitch Perfect 2 ended up taking the top spot over the weekend, knocking Avengers: Age of Ultron out of first place. The female-led comedy is a huge score for actor turned director Elizabeth Banks, who should have new found power in Hollywood after this huge opening. Pitch Perfect 2 made an estimated $70.3 million dollars in its first weekend, destroying its action movie competition.

Mad Max: Fury Road opened in second place. Surely Warner Bros is questioning their decision to release the movie against both Age of Ultron and Pitch Perfect 2, which surely gnawed at its totals. It made an estimated $44.4 million dollars in its first week of release. Hopefully word of mouth keeps the movie in theaters for the near future.

Avengers: Age of Ultron fell to third place due to the increased competition, but don’t cry for Marvel’s juggernaut which has already made over a billion dollars worldwide. In it’s third week of release, the movie made an estimated $38.8 million dollars over the past weekend, while losing only 50% of  the previous week’s audience. Expect the Age of Ultron to continue for the next few weeks.

There was a huge drop at the fourth spot with Hot Pursuit making an estimated $5.7 million dollars in its second week of release. The comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara as an outrageous duo has under-performed expectations. Surely the release of Pitch Perfect 2 won’t help the remaining box-office run for the movie.

Somehow Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 continued to hang on in the top five spots. It made another $3.6 million dollars in its fifth week of release…somehow…
