Crowds flocked to theaters to see the latest mutation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Despite mixed reviews and a debatable modernization of the property, the film pulled in an impressive $65 million dollars over the weekend. Industry insiders were skeptical if it would have a good opening since there is an overlap of fan-bases with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Paramount was so thrilled that they have already green-lit the sequel. (Reportedly to feature franchise favorites Casey Jones, Rocksteady and Beebop.)
In its second week, crowd-favorite Guardians of the Galaxy made $41.5 million in it’s second week of release, well on its way to the $200 million mark. Coming in third was Into the Storm with $18 million dollars despite a weekend at the movies that is full of action-movie spectacle. Coming in fourth is The Hundred-Foot Journey with $11.1 million dollars and in fifth place was Lucy with a little over $9 million dollars.
