What goes up, must come down. It’s been an amazing run atop the box-office for Lucasfilm and Disney, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally fallen from first place this past weekend. The buddy cop comedy Ride Along 2 debuted in the top spot with an estimated $35.3 million dollar opening. However, the sequel made less than the original Ride Along did, when it had a $41 million dollar January opening in 2014.
The Revenant probably had the most impressive weekend performance as the movie is surely being propelled by the surge of high-profile awards wins recently. It only took an estimated 20% dip from the previous week and might enjoy a similar “prestige” boost that films such as American Sniper have in the past. The film made an estimated $31.8 million dollars over the weekend and is showing no real signs of slowing down.
Coming in third place was The Force Awakens with an estimated $26.3 million dollars over the weekend, which pushed its record-breaking domestic total to over $852 million dollars. It also sits in third place, behind Avatar and Titanic, on the list of all-time grossing movies worldwide. So don’t feel too sorry about its fall from first place.
Michael Bay’s film, 13 Hours, debuted with an estimated $16.2 million dollars over the weekend. The movie has gotten mixed reviews, but most agreeing that it is better than Bay’s standard output. However, this is his “small film” before he goes back to ruining the Transformers series.
Daddy’s Home managed to hang in the top five for another week making an estimated $9.5 million dollars. The comedy has been a quiet success putting together four consistent weeks following its Christmas debut.
