The Rock shook up the box-office this past weekend with his disaster action film, San Andreas. The special effects heavy movie was expected to open in first, however it exceeded expectations with an estimated $53.2 million dollar opening. This is good news for Dwayne Johnson whose last movie, Hercules, under-performed last summer. There is a long history of success when cutting edge special effects combine with the real-world terror of a natural disaster and this film was no exception to the trend.
Pitch Perfect 2 held on to the second spot, continuing its enormous success by making another estimated $14.3 million dollars over the weekend. The movie looks to cross the $150 million dollar mark as the comedy is actually getting added to more theaters.
Tomorrowland had a pretty sharp drop in its second week signalling the movie may not have had the positive word of mouth that it needed. Disney’s science-fiction adventure managed to make another $13.8 million dollars, as it looks like the movie will barely end up crossing the $100 million dollar total domestic gross mark. Tomorrowland is a rare misfire in Disney’s recent slate of releases which have dominated the market.
Mad Max: Fury Road continued to take the long route to box-office success by staying in the top five for the third consecutive week. The critically applauded action film made another estimated $13.6 million dollars over the weekend and has set the new benchmark for this summer’s action films.
Coming in fifth is Avengers: Age of Ultron whose fan base continues to watch the movie multiple times. It has already grossed over $425 million dollars domestically as Marvel begins to shift their marketing attention to their next upcoming release Ant-Man.
