This was another one of those weekends where the box-office champ was clear from the moment Spectre’s release date was set. The James Bond series has a proven track record, so its success was preordained. However, after the $88 million dollar opening and one billion dollar worldwide success of Skyfall, it is clear that the Daniel Craig era is beginning to lose steam. This past weekend Spectre had an estimated $73 million dollar debut, for what is estimated to be one of the most expensive films of the year. Despite the opening, there is sure to be heightened conversations about the future of the franchise and where to go from here, due to falling numbers and critic’s scores.
Coming in second place was the The Peanuts Movie, with an estimated $45 million dollars in its debut weekend. The opening is not a disappointment, but not one of the larger animated debuts of 2015. There were questions about the wisdom in opening against Spectre. However, the true test of The Peanuts Movie’s box-office success will be in whether it hangs in the top five spots into the month of December. There have been a lot of animated hits geared towards families this year, such as Home and Hotel Transylvania 2, that found audiences for weeks after their openings. That being said, nothing ever seems to come easy for Charlie Brown…
People simply can’t get enough of The Martian. Despite the fact that everyone already knows what’s going to happen at the end of the movie, people continue to come back and rewatch the sci-fi drama. It managed to finish in third place with an estimated $9.3 million dollars this past weekend in its sixth week of release. Eyes will now follow Ridley Scott and Matt Damon as they move onto their follow-up projects, including sequels to Prometheus and the Bourne franchises.
In its fourth week of release, Goosebumps made another estimated $6.9 million dollars over the weekend. The adaption of the popular children’s book has become a staple in the top five spots at the box-office over the past month.
Rounding out the top five is Bridge of Spies. The film made another estimated $6 million dollars and continues to prove the power of word of mouth. The Steven Spielberg espionage film has played the long game and managed to have a good run, despite a shaky opening.
