Box Office Report – SPECTRE Keeps its Competition in Check

There was a diverse offering of movies over the past weekend, with the top five spots at the box-office full of different options. It was no surprise that James Bond won the day again, with another first place finish for Spectre. The movie made an estimated $35.4 million dollars in its second weekend of release pushing its domestic total to over $130 million dollars. However, what is really making the executives at Sony Pictures dance, is that the movie has already made almost $550 million dollars worldwide. It’s hard to imagine Daniel Craig won’t return for another run in the Bond tuxedo with numbers like that.

The Peanuts Movie had a successful second weekend as it lost 45% of its first week’s audience. The animated family film made an estimated $24.2 million dollars, pushing its domestic total to over $82 million dollars. It looks like Charlie Brown gets to be a winner for a few weeks longer. You can expect to see this movie pop up over the holidays for years to come.

The comedy Love the Coopers debuted in third place with an estimated $8.4 million dollars. The holiday film slightly exceeded expectations, however the movie has not received much positive buzz, so expect to see the movie drop off quickly.

The success story of the fall season, The Martian, continues its impressive run adding yet another estimated $6.7 million dollars to its total. The movie’s domestic take has already crossed the $200 million dollar mark and is the new standard bearer for science fiction dramas. It has spent the past seven weeks in top four spots at the box-office, which is proof that audiences can’t get enough of the movie.

THE MARTIAN

In its first week of release, The 33, debuted in fifth place. The movie recounts the true story of the Chilean mining disaster, which trapped 33 miners underground for over two months. The movie made an estimated $5.8 million dollars over the weekend. While the film has received mixed critical reviews, it’s getting strong scores from audiences, so it will be interesting to see if the movie can hang around a few weeks.
