Box Office Report – Spoiler Alert! DEADPOOL Tops the Box-Office for the Second Weekend

In its second week of release, Deadpool almost made back its entire production budget in the short three day span. The R-rated phenomenon has already grossed over $235 million dollars in the U.S. and by Wednesday it will have grossed over $500 million dollars worldwide. The Deadpool train has just left the station and we should expect to see his beady white eyes for a time to come.

Kung Fu Panda 3 held a firm grip on the number two spot and in its fourth week of release made an estimated $12.5 million dollars. Dreamworks has managed two bonafide animated hits in a row in the winter period, after finding similar success with Home last year.

The biblical epic Risen has once again proven the power of Christian-themed cinema at the box-office. The story of a Roman soldier’s search for the body of Jesus made an estimated $11.8 million dollars in its debut weekend. It is a huge success for Sony Pictures, who invested an announced $20 million dollars into its production budget. Expect to see this hang in the top ten throughout the next few weeks.

Fourth place belonged to the horror film, The Witch. In its first week of release it made an estimated $8.6 million dollars over the weekend. The movie may have been slightly affected by the R-rated Deadpool attracting some of the mature audience who may have typically gone to a horror movie.

How to Be Single had a considerable drop in its second week of release, losing over 50% of the previous week’s audience. The romantic comedy made an estimated $8.2 million dollars, but seemingly lost its luster after its Valentine’s Day debut. It will be interesting to track if studios begin focusing on action tentpoles, over traditional romantic comedies for the holiday period.
