The action-comedy Spy had the attention of industry insiders quietly gauging the box-office viability of director Paul Feig and star Melissa McCarthy. They both proved that their previous string of profitable films is no fluke, with a strong fan base that seems to come to their movies every time. Spy was no exception to the rule, as it debuted in first place over the past weekend at the box-office.
The McCarthy vehicle made an estimated $30 million dollars over the past weekend, which falls in line with her other hits such as Bridesmaids and The Heat. While this is not an opening for the record books, it does show that McCarthy’s star power is still strong. This bodes well for the upcoming Ghostbusters adaptation in which the director and actress will team up again.
Coming in second place is the disaster movie, San Andreas. The movie lost slightly more than half of the previous weekend’s audience with an estimated $26.4 million dollars, which isn’t that bad considering the movie is not that good. In any case, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has proven to be a rare action star in an era of franchise movies. It will be interesting to watch his next move.
Opening in third place is Insidious Chapter 3, with an estimated $23 million dollars over the weekend. The third installment in the horror franchise had a healthy debut which signals that there is no end to the franchise in sight.
In its first week in theaters, HBO’s Entourage debuted in fourth place which is surely a huge disappointment for all involved. The follow-up to the hit television show only managed a $10 million dollar opening over the weekend period. Judging from the opening it seems that there was little interest in the movie outside of the HBO viewers who made the show a hit.
Rounding out the top five is Mad Max: Fury Road, with another $7.9 million dollars added to its total. George Miller’s modern classic has spent the past four weeks in the top five, proving that sometimes quality rises to the the top.
