Box Office Report – STAR WARS Narrowly Survives the Grizzly Debut of THE REVENANT

For the first time in the past month, Star Wars: The Force Awakens received competition for the box-office crown. The smash hit continued raking in the cash with an estimated $41.6 million dollar weekend. The film’s domestic total crossed the $800 million dollar mark, while also having a huge $53 million dollar debut in China, which are both record-breaking numbers. The Force Awakens has made about $1.7 billion dollars worldwide and still is one billion short of Avatar’s lofty record, however time is on Star Wars side.

The Revenant opened in wide release this past weekend and was clearly the beneficiary of stellar reviews (like this one), positive word of mouth, and the public’s curiosity to see Leonardo DiCaprio get mauled by a bear. The movie expanded to over 3,000 theaters and actually averaged more per theater than The Force Awakens, which is a commendable feat even a month after the blockbuster’s initial release. The brutal film is stark counter programming to the space opera and should enjoy a good run in the month of January.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s comedy Daddy’s Home continues its surprisingly strong run, adding another $15 million dollars to its total. The comedic duo have their second certified hit (The Other Guys) together and we should expect to see them team up again in the future.

Coming in fourth place was the only new release of the week, The Forest. The Natalie Dormer led horror movie had a lucrative opening, with an estimated $13 million dollars. The movie has an announced production budget of $10 million dollars, so expect to see more from this horror franchise in the future.

Finally rounding out the top five spots was Sisters, which continues its impressive run in the shadow of Star Wars. The comedy made another estimated $7.1 million dollars to add to its total and is going strong.
