Box Office Report – STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Continues to Dominate in its Second Week

The surprise hit of the summer continued its domination of the box-office, as Straight Outta Compton easily took the top spot for the second week in a row. The biopic about the rise and fall of N.W.A., one of hip-hop’s more innovative and controversial acts, made another estimated $26.7 million dollars over the past weekend. The drama has totaled over $111 million dollars domestically and it looks as if it will hang around the top five for a few more weeks.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation continued its reign as the action movie to see, as it collected another estimated $11.7 million dollars over the past weekend. The wisdom of Paramount’s decision to move the film up nearly six months from its original December release date continues to pay dividends, as its new competition, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., fell to the might of the IMF.

The new horror entry on the scene was Sinister 2 with $10.2 million dollars in its first weekend, which severely underperformed in comparison to the original. Scott Derrickson’s Sinister had a $18 million dollar opening in 2012, proving that the series might not have the franchise viability the studio might have first thought.

Fourth place belonged to Hitman: Agent 47. The second adaptation of the popular video game series failed to light a fire under its fanbase, as it opened with an estimated $8.2 million dollars. Which is another black eye on the relatively unsuccessful video game movie genre, which has been trying to get in gear for over twenty years. Now the industry will look squarely at next year’s Warcraft, as the next hope to give the gamer genre credibility.

Rounding out the top five was The Man From U.N.C.L.E. which has quietly been one of the biggest flops of the summer. The film made $7.4 million dollars in it’s second week of release, bringing its domestic total to over $26 million dollars. However, don’t shed too many tears for Warner Bros and Henry Cavill, as they have the ultimate ace up their sleeve with the pending release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in seven months.
