It was another healthy weekend for the fall box-office as a new movie was crowned the weekend champion. Ben Affleck has turned around his movie star fortunes in the past decade. First he moved behind the camera and padded his credibility with movies such as Argo and The Town, before reestablishing his star power with psychological thriller Gone Girl and then donning the cape and cowl as Batman for a new generation. If this past weekend is any indication, audiences are ready to see the actor in a variety of roles.
His latest thriller, The Accountant, had a decent $24.7 million dollar debut. The movie about an autistic assassin, was heavily marketed around the actor and it proved to pay off in the film’s first weekend of release. The movie has an announced budget of $44 million dollars, so this is a win for all involved.
There are few living comedians with the visibility of Kevin Hart. His newest movie, Kevin Hart: What Now? had an estimated $11.9 million dollar debut weekend, narrowly edging out The Girl on the Train for second place by thousands of dollars. It’s so close, that we could expect to see the numbers readjusted at any time. However, wherever the final numbers fall, it will still qualify as the biggest opening for a stand-up comedy film ever.
Fourth place belonged to Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children with an estimated $8.9 million dollars in its third week of release. The movie has only made back about $65 million dollars of its $110 million dollar production budget and looks to be yet another questionable release on Fox’s slate.
Rounding out the top five is Deepwater Horizon, which continues to leak oil for Lionsgate. The film, based on true events, made an estimated $6.3 million dollars and has yet to cross the $50 million dollar mark in total domestic grosses. It looks as if the movie will end up about $50 million dollars short of its budget. Fortunately for Mark Wahlberg, he has secured another big payday for his next film Transformers movie next summer.
