It wasn’t a matter of if the Avengers: Age of Ultron would dominate it’s opening weekend at the box-office. It was only a matter of how much Marvel’s juggernaut (see what I did there) would pound its competition into submission. The only question was if it could top The Avengers largest opening weekend of all-time, with over $207 million dollars.
Avengers: Age of Ultron had an estimated $187.6 million dollar opening, which is far below the original, but no less impressive. The Avengers was a team-up spectacle people hadn’t seen before, which was sure to entice curious moviegoers. In addition, Age of Ultron opened on the same weekend as the largest boxing match in history as well. Box Office Mojo conservatively estimated that $5-$10 million dollars was shaved off of the movie’s Saturday totals due to the match. Regardless the Age of Ultron is another incredible hit for Marvel and Disney and the only test is to see how other new releases will effect its staying power.
The Age of Adaline used counter-programming to its advantage and managed to move up from third to second place. The romantic drama managed to make $6.2 million dollars in its second week of release, narrowly edging out Furious 7.
Furious 7 dominated ticket sales for the entire month of April, becoming one of the largest grossing films of all time. However, it was unceremoniously knocked to the side dropping from first to third place, mostly due to its core audience choosing to see Age of Ultron instead. It made an estimated $6.1 million dollars in its fifth week of release and with a total of over $330 million domestic dollars, it has certainly exceeded all expectations.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 made another estimated $5.5 million dollars in its third week of release. What else can I say… Why won’t moviegoers put this franchise out of its misery…
Home refuses to drop out of the top five spots. The animated family film made another $3.3 million dollars in its sixth week of release, despite no one over the age of seven even knowing the movie exists. Regardless, Dreamworks is praying to the movie rain gods that this movie is a success, which was vital for the struggling studio.
