Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued its meteoric climb up the all-time list of Hollywood blockbusters. It’s poised to become the most successful domestic film in history by week’s end and it has managed to gross $1.5 million dollars worldwide. The eyes are on the hit movie to see if it will eventually break Avatar’s $2.7 million dollar worldwide record and it looks like it has a great shot. The movie still has not been released in China which should give the movie another boost as well. In its third week of release, The Force Awakens, made an estimated $88.3 million dollars over the first weekend of the new year and its domestic total sits at over $740 million dollars.
After having a decent opening last week, Daddy’s Home had an incredible second weekend, by only losing an estimated 25% of the previous week’s audience. In its second week, the Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy made an estimated $29 million dollars, pushing its total to over $93 million dollars. It seems that the combination of the New Year’s holiday and people already having seen Star Wars has helped out the movie. It would be hard to imagine that we won’t be seeing more of the Ferrell/Wahlberg combo in the future, since they have been proven to be a bankable duo.
Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight opened up to a wide release and had a healthy weekend with an estimated $16.2 million dollars. The western has managed to total almost $30 million dollars in just two weeks of release and is well on its way to making back its production budget. This week sees the opening of The Revenant, which is another hard-hitting R-rated picture. It could presumably eat into some of The Hateful Eight’s audience as well, so it will be worth watching in the next Box Office Report.
Sisters had another strong weekend in its third week of release. The Tina Fey and Amy Poehler led comedy made another estimated $12.5 million dollars over the past weekend, while losing only 11% of its previous week’s audience.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip continues to shock the world and hangs in the top five for the third consecutive week. The movie has found its niche by capitalizing on the market of kids (and parents who have to take them) who are too young for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie made another $11.8 million dollars over the weekend and continues to roll on.
