Box Office Report – THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN Sells the Most Tickets

It was a low key weekend at the box-office, as The Girl on the Train took the top spot in its first week of release. The movie adaptation, based on the novel of the same name, is led by Emily Blunt (Sicario) along with a star-studded supporting cast. The movie made an estimated $24.3 million dollars in its debut weekend and looks to be a solid fall hit for Universal.

Coming in second place was Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which managed to lose less than 50% of the previous week’s audience. While the movie has grossed over $51 million dollars in the past two weeks, it looks as if it will still fall short of the announced $110 million dollar production budget, which has to be a disappointment for Fox Studios.

Deepwater Horizon fell to third place in its second week of release with an estimated $11.5 million dollars. The movie based on the true story of the oil rig disaster has been getting decent reviews, but will be a big money loser. The movie just crossed the $38 million dollar mark, which is far from the profitability line for the studio.

The Magnificent Seven continues plugging away in its third week of release with an estimated $9 million dollar weekend. The movie was produced on an announced $90 million dollar budget, which it will cross in the next few weeks. It seems that Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington has proven that the western genre isn’t totally done.

Rounding out the top five was Storks, which added another estimated $8.2 million dollars in its third week of release. The animated comedy continues to feed on the vacuum of cartoons at movie theaters this month and should hang around the top ten for a few more weeks.
