Box Office Report – The Hunger Games Stays On Top For a Third Week

There weren’t any new nation-wide movie releases this past weekend and audiences responded by staying away from the theaters. The weekend proved to be one of the worst of the year for ticket sales. The top 12 movies only managed to gross an estimated $70.4 million dollars accumulatively. A number that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay pt 1 eclipsed on its own, in its first weekend of release. December is heavy with releases towards the second half, so things will assuredly get back to normal.

The weekend went as anticipated with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay pt 1 cruising into a first place finish at the box-office this past weekend. The third adventure in the successful series has managed to hang onto the top spot for three straight weekends by earning another $21.6 million dollars.

Penguins of Madagascar came in second place with $11.1 million dollars in its second week of release. The movie has failed to gain any traction despite starring, Marvel’s new Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch and his inability to say the word “Penguin.” That should have sold tickets by itself.

Coming in third was Horrible Bosses 2, which added another $8.6 million dollars to its total. The comedy sequel has underperformed for Warner Bros, totalling only $36 million dollars in two weeks of release.

Big Hero 6 continues to wring all of the juice that it can out of its box-office run. It added another $8.1 million dollars to its impressive five-week domestic total of over $177 million dollars. Surely Disney will be promoting it heavily during the upcoming awards season.

Interstellar continues to reel in curious moviegoers, while making another $8 million dollars. The space odyssey has made over $158 million domestic dollars in its run so far.
