Box Office Report – THE MARTIAN Finds A Way to Survive and Rises Back to First Place

This was a monumental weekend at the box-office, but not for any of the right reasons. Unless, you are The Martian of course. In its fourth week of release the science fiction drama came back from last week’s second place finish to reclaim the top spot. It made an estimated $15.9 million dollars over the past weekend, which is a testament to the staying power of the film.

Goosebumps narrowly fell to second place in its second week of release with an estimated $15.5 million dollars. The family horror film managed to hang on to a majority of its audience despite some competition from new films. It’s still far from equaling its production budget, however there are some other disasters this weekend that took the spotlight off of the movie.

Coming in third was Bridge of Spies with an estimated $11.3 million dollars in its second week of release. Despite having a lackluster opening, it looks as if the Spielberg film will manage to at least equal its budget. Oh how times have changed…

This will be an interesting case study for studios to analyze. Vin Diesel, the star of the billion dollar grossing Furious 7, latest movie had an embarrassing opening with an estimated $10.8 million dollars. The Last Witch Hunter opened in fourth place at the box-office and can be seen as nothing less than a flop. This is another strong sign that franchises, not stars, are what drives today’s ticket sales.

Finally rounding out the top five was Hotel Transylvania 2. The Adam Sandler led animated film continued to impress with a strong run that continued into its fifth week. It made another estimated $9 million dollars while closing in on the $150 million domestic mark. It’s also worth noting that Jem and the Holograms debuted with only $1.3 million dollars in twelfth place. Ouch…
