The Martian once again finished in the top spot after not getting much competition from the new entries. The drama has been pleasing audiences and critics alike, with its unique blend of humor, action, and grounded science. It seems that the release of The Martian also solidifies a trend, following Interstellar and Gravity, as succeessful grounded space adventures in the fall season. As Box Office Mojo points out, The Martian is tracking at almost the exact same rate as the Christopher Nolan’s film last year, so it does seem that there is a ceiling astronauts on film. In its second week of release the Ridley Scott movie made an estimated $37 million dollars. It’s projected that its total will end up around the $190 million dollar mark by the end of its run.
Hotel Transylvania 2 continued its domination of the animated family market with another impressive weekend. In its third week of release, the movie made an estimated $20.3 million dollars. It clearly cut into Pan’s audience as well, as it held on firmly to the second spot at the box-office.
Coming in third place is Joe Wright’s (Hanna) Peter Pan origin story, Pan. The film has been a huge disappointment with critics and looks to be a costly gamble for the studio. In its first week the movie made an estimated $15.5 million dollars over its debut weekend. The budget is conservatively estimated at around $150 million dollars and that is without the marketing and promotional expenses. This must be a huge loss and disappointment for Warner Bros. It may be a few years before we see the adventures of Peter Pan on the big-screen again.
Probably the biggest surprise of the fall has been the steady success of The Intern. It’s another indication that movies without spectacle still have a chance to be viable at the box-office. In its fourth week it managed to make another estimated $8.7 million dollars. It simply seems that audiences can’t get enough of the heartwarmer.
The standout crime thriller Sicario continued to find audiences in its fourth week of release. It made an estimated $7.3 million dollars, which was good enough for a fifth place finish over the weekend. Again, this film reflects the diversity of choices at the theaters right now.
