It was another surprising weekend at the box-office as two new entries far exceeded their expectations. Coming in first place was the Michael Ealy led thriller, The Perfect Guy. The throwback to the insane lover genre that was hugely popular in the 90’s, managed to make an estimated $25.8 million dollars in its first weekend of release. This is the fifth weekend in a row that a movie featuring a predominately African-American cast has come in first place in the domestic box-office. This is a positive sign for the future of diversity in Hollywood, particularly as there will be an increase of major productions led by black actors, such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Black Panther.
M. Night Shyamalan’s new film, The Visit, is viewed as a comeback for the director who has seen the highs and lows of Hollywood, after being responsible for both The Sixth Sense and The Last Airbender. His latest horror movie debuted with an estimated $25.4 million dollars, just narrowly missing the top spot. The movie is receiving positive review from both critics and audiences. The Visit was also produced by Blumhouse on a meager $5 million dollar budget, which is an extraordinary success and turn around on their investment. Expect to see more from Shyamalan in the near future.
The War Room continued to rake in the dough as it secured third place for the weekend. The religious based film continues its surprising run in the theaters and again only lost a small fraction of the previous week’s audience. The movie made another estimated $7.7 million dollars as it has received an unbelievable amount of support from its base.
A Walk in the Woods made another estimated $4.7 million dollars over the past weekend, which was good enough for the fourth spot. The Robert Redford and Nick Nolte comedic drama has found its niche audience (much like all of the movies in this week’s top five spots.) It’s encouraging to see the two screen legends be so well received in the twilight of their careers.
Rounding out the top five is the movie that can’t be stopped, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. There isn’t too much about this movie that hasn’t been already said. In its seventh week of release, the spy thriller has made another estimated $4.1 million dollars, while opening strong in more foreign markets as well. The only question left is what storyline they will come up with for the sixth installment.
