The Revenant continues to thrive in the harsh winter environment, while its competitors struggled to maintain their audiences over the past weekend. The Academy Award nominated film climbed up to first place, in its fifth week of release. The movie collected another estimated $16 million dollars over the weekend and brought its domestic total to over $119 million dollars. It seems that it’s enjoying the same type of January bump in ticket sales that American Sniper received in the same slot last year. Without much competition until February’s Deadpool and Zoolander 2, expect to see this movie hang around the top ten for weeks to come.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens also got back into the swing of things, by moving up to second place from third. While it’s looking increasingly unlikely that it will break Avatar’s 2.7 billion dollar worldwide record, it still is on track to cross the two billion dollar worldwide mark. The blockbuster made another $14.2 million dollars over the past weekend and pushing its domestic total to nearly $880 million dollars. There is only eleven months to wait until another Star Wars adventure is on screen, so the fun will just keep on coming.
Third place belonged to Ride Along 2, which fell from its first place debut last weekend. The Kevin Hart and Ice Cube comedy made an estimated $12.9 million dollars in its second week of release. However, it lost about 63% of the previous week’s audience, which is not a great figure. However, comedies have found a way to linger in the top ten in recent months, so it will be interesting to see its performance next week.
The Zac Efron and Robert Deniro buddy comedy, Dirty Grandpa, made an estimated $11.5 million dollars in its debut weekend. Considering that it didn’t get a huge marketing push and received mediocre reviews, this opening was right on par with industry projections. Efron is surely expecting a big bounce-back when he returns for the Seth Rogen sequel Neighbors 2 later this year as well.
Rounding out the top five was The Boy. The horror flick made its debut in fifth place, with an estimated $11.2 million dollars over the weekend. It seems that there is always an audience for scary movies, no matter the month, time of year, or quality of the actual release. This is yet another example.
