It was a healthy weekend at the box office as a handful of studios will begin monday with a smiles on their faces. The weekend was bouyed by a wide selection of films for audiences to choose from. Finishing in first was perhaps the most mainstream option for moviegoers, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, with an estimated $30.3 million dollars over the past weekend. Last year The Maze Runner made $32 million dollars in its opening weekend, showing that the franchise is simply maintaining its previous audience.
The Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass debuted in second place with an estimated $23.3 million dollars. It’s a solid opening for the R-rated movie which received mixed reviews and has material that may be too hardcore for some viewers’ taste. The film’s tone also doesn’t lend itself for repeat viewings, so we will see how it performs in its second week.
Coming in third was the M. Night Shyamalan horror flick, The Visit, which made another $11.3 million dollars in its second week of release. It truly seems that smaller is better for Shyamalan, who has scored his first legit hit in years. This seems to be the best horror option available for audiences.
The Perfect Guy had a dramatic drop from its first place perch last week. The thriller finished its second weekend in fourth place, with an estimated $9.6 million dollars, a drop of more than 62%. Clearly the movie simply served as a guilty pleasure for many, who are not prime targets for repeat business.
Rounding out the top five is Everest. This is probably the most impressive opening of the bunch with an estimated $7.5 million dollars. The mountain climbing drama was released on only 545 IMAX screens, but managed to average almost $14,000 per theater. It will be interesting to see how the movie performs when it gets a wider release.
