In its first week of release, Disney’s Tomorrowland narrowly won the top spot at the box office over the past weekend. The futuristic family adventure made an estimated $32.2 million dollars over the three day period, despite getting mixed reviews from critics and audiences. (Read our review here.) The effect of any negative buzz will be felt in its second week, so many will have their eyes on how the movie performs.
Pitch Perfect 2 continued its rampage through the box-office with a strong second week. The female-led comedy made another $30.3 million dollars, as the unlikely blockbuster of the summer continues breaking industry expectations. Surely Paul Feig and the crew behind the Ghostbusters reboot are encouraged by the numbers as well. It’s clear that there is a gigantic market for female dominated comedies.
Mad Max: Fury Road had a strong second week by making another estimated $23.9 million dollars. The action movie directed by George Miller, lost less than 50% of its audience in the second week, which speaks to the film being buoyed by good reviews and word of mouth.
In its first week of release, Poltergeist debuted in fourth place taking in an estimated $23 million dollars. The franchise has a highly recognizable name and there was a strong marketing push for the remake. Perhaps, Mad Max: Fury Road cut into the adult audience that would normally have checked out the movie. It is still curious why they didn’t release it in the fall, where there would have been less cut-throat competition for audiences’ attention.
Avengers: Age of Ultron has not taken its foot off the gas, as it crossed the $400 million dollar mark in total domestic grosses. Over the past weekend it made another $20.9 million dollars to add to its hefty totals. While Age of Ultron is still going strong, Marvel has begun its Ant-Man campaign, so keep your eyes peeled for the marketing blitz.
