Box Office Report – ZOOTOPIA Hangs On To First Place For the Third Week in a Row

Zootopia took the top spot at the box-office for the third week in a row. The animated film has had a flawless run so far and this past weekend pushed the movie over the $200 million dollar domestic mark. Next week, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens and will inevitably siphon its competitor’s ticket sales, aside from children too young to attend. So, it seems that Zootopia made the most of it last weekend on top by making an estimated $37.1 million dollars. This is yet another winning move from Disney.

The biggest disappointment over the past weekend was the debut of The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which opened with a sickly $29 million dollar opening. This is the third film in the series and is the only entry to have less than a $52 million dollar opening. This has to be a disturbing trend for Lionsgate who have split the final book into two installments, with the second half of the movie scheduled for a summer release next year. The series seems to be heading in the wrong direction, with fans and audiences giving up on the franchise in huge numbers. It will be interesting to see how the studio handles the troubling situation.

Miracles from Heaven is yet another faith-based film that came out of nowhere based on religious audiences. It opened with an estimated $14.8 million dollars over the weekend, which eclipsed its production budget in just a few days. It should hang around the top ten for the next few weeks.

10 Cloverfield Lane held on surprisingly well in its second week of release with an estimated $12.5 million dollars. It lost less than 50% of the first week’s audience, which is a hugely positive sign since the movie was so mysterious and reportedly has a twist ending that could sour audiences. It seems that word of mouth was good enough for a fourth place finish and is a great sign that the movie will have life on other mediums. If you haven’t checked it out yet, we would suggest giving it a spin.

Rounding out the top five was Deadpool with an estimated $8 million dollars over the past weekend. The movie has held on strong in its sixth week of release and pushed its domestic total over $340 million dollars. It will be interesting if Batman v Superman re-energizes Deadpool, primarily due to sold-out tickets. This should be a historic weekend coming up for superhero fans.
