Animated films continue to sell tickets at movie theaters as Zootopia took over the top spot in dramatic fashion. The movie was the largest opening ever for Disney animation with an estimated $73.7 million dollars over the past weekend. The movie about a bunny trying to prove her worth, connected with audiences as it packed theaters and received high critical scores. It’s possible that the family flick will continue to sell tickets even after the opening of Batman v Superman in two weeks, due to it being accessible to all ages. This is yet another convincing piece of evidence that the movie industry is as healthy as it has ever been.
London Has Fallen opened to an estimated $21.7 million dollars in its first weekend of release. The sequel to the successful thriller, Olympus Has Fallen, surely didn’t have an opening as big as expected, but does not qualify as a disaster. The movie has an announced $60 million dollar production budget, which can be crossed but is unlikely. Aside from the looming Dawn of Justice, it will be hard to draw repeat viewers away from the critically acclaimed Deadpool, for those looking for hardcore action. It is amazing that we have reached the point when March is as competitive as the summer season.
There isn’t much more that hasn’t already been said about the astronomically successful movie, Deadpool, that hasn’t already been said. The movie continued its unprecedented tear through the early part of the year and in its fourth week of release added another estimated $16.4 million dollars to its record-breaking domestic total. It has now made over $310 million dollars and climbing. The release of X-Men: Apocalypse is only two months away, so it would make sense for Fox to take the opportunity to shed light on their future plans for the character. The future is bright for the Merc with a Mouth.
Tina Fey’s latest effort, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, had a mild opening with an estimated $7.6 million dollars over the past weekend. It debuted in fourth place with an announced budget of $35 million dollars. The movie has an uphill battle to make back its investment, however Fey had a sneaky hit this winter with Sisters, which managed to stick around for weeks. We will see if word of mouth will carry the movie in the near future.
Fifth place belonged to Gods of Egypt, as the biggest action flop of the season continued its plummet in its second week of release. The movie made an estimated $5 million dollars in and lost over 60% of the previous week’s audience. The movie has made only $28 million dollars back on Lionsgate’s production budget of $140 million dollars in its second week. The movie will likely fall out of the top ten by the next weekend.
