Marvel Studios has made a habit of finding ascending or underappreciated talent when casting roles within the MCU. Whether it was casting Robert Downey Jr. when he was literally uninsurable to work on movie sets, choosing an overweight Chris Pratt to be an action star in Guardians of the Galaxy, or Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, they have proven to have their fingers on the pulse and knowing who audiences want to see next.
One of the biggest mysteries for Marvel’s upcoming slate is who will be cast as jet pilot turned superhero, Captain Marvel, in their cinematic universe. The character has been confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War before starring in her own solo film, much in the way the aforementioned Black Panther was introduced this year in Captain America: Civil War. Which should increase awareness amongst the general public and start to build anticipation for Captain Marvel’s own adventures. According to a report by Variety this afternoon, Marvel is in negotiations with an actress for the part
After her Oscar-winning turn in “Room,” Brie Larson may be ready to step into the shoes of one of Marvel’s most popular female superheroes.
Sources tell Variety Marvel is in early talks with Larson to play Captain Marvel in the studio’s standalone project. It is unknown where things stand in negotiations, but sources have told Variety that Larson is the first choice, and that she’s leaning toward playing the part.
Aside from Larson’s physical similarities to Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, at 26 years old the actress is the right age to take on the role for the next ten years. More importantly, she’s an Academy Award winner for Room, proving that she has the chops to create a character with depth, that will go beyond the page. She has also shown a willingness to get into big-budget filmmaking recently by nabbing a starring role alongside Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson in Kong: Skull Island. Additionally, the actress has already worked with Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo on the TV show Community, which makes the connection make even more sense.
This is a huge moment for Marvel and could end up becoming a defining moment during the upcoming phase of films for the studio. Audiences and particularly fans of the comics have been clamoring loudly for Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero movie. In the pages of the comics, the company has historically been slightly progressive and ahead of the social curve, so the delays in getting the movie made thus far have been a source of frustration with some. While a director has yet to be announced, Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) are currently crafting the script for the upcoming feature. The casting is not yet complete, so we will make sure to bring you the latest as we are in for another fun ride from Marvel.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for release on March 8th, 2019.
