While Captain America: Civil War has been the object of Marvel fans’ desire, there is also a second Marvel film to be released next year as well that is getting a fraction of the fanfare. Marvel’s upcoming adaptation of the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, is gearing up to go into production later in the year and it’s guaranteed to be like nothing Marvel has done previously.
Marvel Studios will be revealing the hidden world of magic that exists, but has yet to be shown in their growing cinematic universe. The movie can be seen as a risky proposition, since Dr. Strange is not a physical action hero. Doctor Strange is about an arrogant surgeon who loses the use of his hands. He travels the world in search of a miraculous treatment and finds himself engulfed in a hidden world of magic and being trained by the Ancient One. Strange is essentially a modern-day wizard and making him endearing to audiences, will be a challenge in itself. Marvel seems to be going about it the right way by assembling a cast that is world-class and not the type of actors that you would associate with the Marvel brand. Benedict Cumberbatch was confirmed as Dr. Strange last year and actress Tilda Swinton was uncovered to be in serious talks to play the Ancient One. It seems that Marvel is adding yet another Academy Award nominated actor to its roster.
After many months of being rumored to have secured a role, Deadline has reported the role that acclaimed actor Chiwetel Ejiofor will be playing in Doctor Strange. Ejiofor will reportedly be Baron Mordo in the upcoming movie. Fans of the comics know Mordo as one of Doctor Strange’s biggest rivals. He and Strange were both schooled in the mystical art of magic by the Ancient One. However, Mordo becomes overly ambitious and corrupted, which leads to his banishment and intensifies the rivalry with Strange. Deadline also explains that it may not be a straight-forward villainous role and Mordo may include characteristics of other lesser-known characters from Doctor Strange lore. It also makes sense to keep the actor around for not only Doctor Strange movies, but also for the larger MCU.
Director Scott Derrickson (Sinister) has a large task ahead of him. While he has an extremely talented cast of actors, he also has the added pressure of re-appropriating many roles and changing the visual complexion of the comic for the big screen. While Doctor Strange is a long-running comic book character, it definitely doesn’t have the rabid and demanding fanbase of the other Marvel characters, so it will be afforded a little bit of latitude. However, it does seem that the film is losing a lot of the Asian influences that are felt in Doctor Strange’s world. It would seem to reason that Strange’s sidekick Wong, would be the next major casting announcement for the film. We will be sure to bring you the latest so keep checking back!
Doctor Strange opens on November 6th, 2016.
